I don't deny that there are poor corporate citizens whose culture fails to acknowledge the desires and needs of their customers. That's their right, and unfortunately there are too many of them. However, the power of the United Breaks Guitars video is showcasing United's deplorable behavior for more than 5 million potential customers who can now decide whether to bestow their business on United or another airline like Southwest, JetBlue or AirTran that listens to and responds to their customers' desires. If United refuses to change, their business will continue to decline and they will eventually join the ranks of TWA, Pan Am, Eastern, Braniff and the litany of bankrupt airlines who failed to deliver a delightful travel experience. For consumers, this was a revelatory moment that showed United's true colors. I'll fly someone else, thanks.

I'm not sure what to comment on - the quality and hilarity of the video or the appalling conclusion that United denied the damage claim in the end.

The latter point makes me feel defeated, quite frankly. If a guy can put together something like this and get 14,000+ people supporting his cause and STILL get his demage claim denied it begs the question: Is Social Media as powerful as we're lead to believe.

At the end of the day, no matter what we "useless eaters" do (as Henry Kissinger once referred to 'us'- the people) the keepers of the democracy myth - Corporations - will allow us to have our fun while they go about upgrading the Matrix in which we all live.

At least there are rebels who can can crank out a good tune to keep us smiling through it all!

Thanks, John, for another powerful piece. You are 'dead-eye' on with this. IMHO Canton-Akron Airport (CAK) has the best integrated social media and marketing strategy of any entity in the travel industry and all the airlines could learn from their examples. I'm going to give you a new western nickname of John 'dead eye' Heaney. Rock it, dude.
