Too many execs are loathe to do anything simply. But simple works. Simple communicates effectively. And simple is easily and instantly understood. Your branding statement was simple, concise and clear. Ergo, effective.

If anyone reads your mission statement and says "What does that mean?" then your mission statement sucks. It's not cerebral, it's confusing.

Many years ago I worked in sales/management. The new boss (the old boss' son) wanted to have a mission statement. I was asked to be on the committee. Fine. After several meetings and tries to come up with something that said what type of company we were (magazine distributor/sales), it kept coming back to his mission statement. Which naturally he thought was brilliant. Ready? Here it is... "To be what we are and to become what we are capable of being." Nice huh? What the hell does that MEAN? The only reason I remember it is because he had it painted in calligraphy on the wall near my team's office area. Excellent.

A I couldn't agree with you more. I once had to create a mission for a company I founded. I found myself falling into the relm of the superflous. I deleted it all and just said. I will set you apart. Branding isn't JUST for cattle.

I won some major accounts just by doing that. Well I was able to sell it and move on.

If you can't create a good mission statement, don't put one out there, or just use the generic, we don't suck like our competition.
